“It Was A Great Day”: John Travolta Celebrates Grease Anniversary With Throwback Video

John Travolta celebrates the 45th anniversary of Grease by sharing a throwback video from the red carpet premiere of the movie with Olivia Newton-John. The beloved rom-com, based on the stage musical of the same name, follows the high school romance between leather-clad greaser Danny Zuko (Travolta) and the sweet exchange student, Sandy Olsson (Newton-John). Originally setting the record for the highest-grossing musical movie of all time, Grease’s catchy tunes, relatable depiction of teen life, and lovable characters have kept it alive in pop culture.

In honor of the movie’s anniversary, Travolta took to his Instagram to celebrate Grease with a throwback video from its red carpet premiere. The video shows Travolta and Newton-John arriving on the red carpet amid swarms of screaming fans and paparazzi. The throwback is both sweet and sad, as Newton-John passed away last year, but it showcases the beautiful friendship between the two stars.

The Grease anniversary and Travolta’s throwback are bound to resurface questions about the movie’s legacy, including its sequel. Despite being a beloved and long-lasting movie, Grease 2, released in 1982, was a commercial and critical failure. There were attempts at a Grease 3, but the project never became a reality, and the movie series ended on a rather sour note with Grease 2.

While Travolta and Newton-John did not appear in Grease 2, there were plans for them to make a cameo. However, those plans failed to come to fruition. There have been attempts over the years to make a true Grease sequel that would bring back Travolta and Newton-John, but they have not been successful.

Despite the failed attempts at a sequel, Grease recently returned to the screen with the prequel series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies. The show has received mixed-to-positive reviews for its nostalgia and heart, but its music has not lived up to the original movie. While it’s disappointing that Travolta and Newton-John never officially reprised their roles as Danny and Sandy, their legacy in Grease will always be remembered fondly.
