How Neverwinter Pioneered Console MMORPGs a Decade Ago

Neverwinter was one of the first MMORPGs to make a mark on console gaming. With its rich Dungeons & Dragons lore and innovative combat system, it quickly gained a following. In an interview with Executive Producer Brett Norton and Creative Director Randy Mosiondz, they revealed how the game was originally intended to be a co-op game based on R.A. Salvatore’s “Neverwinter Saga” series of novels. However, the team decided to shift towards action-combat, as there weren’t many MMORPGs doing that at the time, and players seeking games with a heavier narrative focus would enjoy single-player story games better anyway.

The game has come a long way since its initial release, with the team continually releasing new modules with a pretty regular cadence. The most recent module, Menzoberranzan, promises to take players to new places in the ever-expanding Forgotten Realms. With the game hitting its eighth year on Xbox (and 10th overall) this year, it seems clear that Neverwinter has endured by growing and evolving with its audience.

Neverwinter is available to play for free on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You can download it here from the Microsoft Store for Xbox.
