AOC accuses Elon Musk of influencing Turkey’s presidential election

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has accused Elon Musk of putting his ‘finger on the scale’ for Turkey’s presidential election by censoring dissident accounts on Twitter at the request of Turkey’s right-wing autocratic leader, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Ocasio-Cortez wrote on BlueSky that she was ‘wondering’ when would be the right time to ‘leave the other place,’ presumably referring to Twitter. She expressed concern about next year’s election given Musk’s actions in Turkey and said that there is a line where the harm of unchecked disinformation exceeds the benefits of direct, authentic communication.

Musk and Erdogan have had a business relationship since at least 2021. Experts have reported an increase in right-wing extremist viewpoints and disinformation about COVID-19 and climate change since Musk acquired the platform. Ocasio-Cortez also slammed Musk for promoting a parody account impersonating her and releasing ‘false policy statements’ on her behalf. She said that Musk’s actions were ‘test balloons’ for the 2024 US election.
